WHO WE SERVE

Since its inception in 1987, the Catholic Education Foundation has made over 103,000 tuition awards to students for a total amount of over $100 million including the commitment to spend $7.85 million for almost 7,000 students in the 2009-2010 school year. These tuition awards have also had a tremendously positive impact on the schools and their surrounding neighborhoods. In fact, many of the urban Catholic schools in the L.A. Archdiocese would cease to exist without CEF tuition support.

Elementary Schools:  The Archdiocese and the Department of Catholic Schools rank the 225 elementary schools based on the finances of the school and the families served.  The CEF helps students in 147 of these schools that are most in need.  Proportionally, CEF provides a greater number of tuition awards to 50 schools that are serving the poorest populations, primarily in the inner-city areas of the three-county Archdiocese. In 2007, CEF opened up program awards to students attending Pre-K to encourage enrollment; studies indicate students who have attended Pre-K are better prepared for kindergarten and beyond. Also, attracting Pre-K students to the schools encourages continued enrollment.

Secondary Schools:  There are 49 high schools in the Archdiocese, including 24 private schools run by religious orders.  The Archdiocese and the Department of Catholic Schools rank these schools according to need.  There are 11 subsidized high schools and CEF grants proportionally more tuition awards to students at those schools.  In total, students at 37 (this includes all programs) high schools are supported by the CEF, 30 of which are administered by the Archdiocese and 7 which are private, but assist a particularly financially deserving population.
